Ths story begins with a young elite mercenary known as "SeeDs" named Squall Leonheart of a prestigious military academy known as "Balamb Garden". As the leading character in this game, wielding his weapon the gunblade, Squall becomes friends with Quistis Trepe, Zell Dincht, Selphie Tilmitt and Irvine Kinneas. As the story develops, he falls in love with Rinoa Heartilly. Throughout the game, he has a distinct rivalry with Seifer Almasy, in which Squall obtained his characteristic facial scar from. The story took it's height with their friendship serving as their bond to reality with Squall and his friends immunize themselves to the effects of Time Compression, travel to Ultimecia's the main villian in the game era and defeat her.
